Digging deeperCrikey, it's time for this year's Peel Day gig! While we're about it, don't forget to check out The John Peel Centre for Creative Arts at Stowmarket Corn Exchange. Join us on Friday 07 October at Norwich Arts Centre for another ace selection of aural orgasm-providing raw talent and our first ever meat raffle, which is included within the entry price – you'll get your raffle ticket when you arrive. And, if you're very lucky, you'll leave with joyously ringing ears and a bag of meat, perhaps containing a pair of chicken breasts, some cured pork and similar delights. Unless you're a vegetarian, in which case you could take home a Bag of Meat in CD format. wombatwombat says "Yum, yum" to both prizes. Uber-cool This Is Fake DIY signings The Victorian English Gentlemans Club frighten and thrill in equal measure. The Cardiff-based trio gets pleasure from building cold-hearted, bass-heavy music with hard edges and brutality with all of their drums, lungs, hearts and guitars. They also use an electric mandolin, an Indian shruti harmonium, a self-made bow-screamo (wire nailed to wood and played with a bow), sparrows and a church bell hit with a hammer. They listen to Liars, Grinderman, 154 by Wire, Deerhoof, Cardiacs and Flowers of Romance by PiL, but have an affinity with the three-minute pop song. Here's a video for Bag of Meat, the title track of that there third LP of theirs: At times recalling technical bands like Maps and Atlases and Youthmovies, Olympians' music is set apart thanks to their songs' underlying strength. Shifting between viscous drones and jagged hulking riffs at the drop of a hat, the Norwich boys hold it all together with three-part harmonies that soar and melt like Lurpak from a slingshot. They also indulge in jerky guitars, tizzy rim-shots and cymbal work with blasts of trumpet and marvellous one-liners. All together now, à la Passeporte, shot at the Waterfront, Norwich on 09 July 2011, "Show me your tits and your teeth…" We're super-excited to welcome back Felixstowe's finest, The Shadow Project , who will be playing new tunes and possibly this very oldie but goodie, Objects Appear, as performed at Norwich Arts Centre for wombatwombat on 07 April 2006: Peeltastic! And with the mighty Huw Stephens on the case for all three bands, you couldn't ask for a better night. Ah-ha! Not only but also, there's a typically cracking line-up from Howlback Hum in the bar with DJ Bufforium , Sam James Hill, Eden Bradfield, Winter Berries , and Olinski. All that and our free-entry meat raffle for only £7 in advance, plus booking fee where applicable – on sale now from NAC (01603 660352), in person from Soundclash Records in St Benedict's (01603 761004), and UEA (01603 508050) or online – or £8 on the door, from 8pm. This is deliciously unmissable. |
