Chilling with Crystal Castles

wombatwombat went into festival overdrive this year, recalls Steve wombat, who hung out with Crystal Castles, thanks to their soundman Dave Doughman who also fronts one of team ww's collective fave bands, Swearing At Motorists

Glastonbury's 40th by Gary Stafford,

First up Glastonbury! Highlights were Funkadelic, Jerry Dammers Spatial AKA Orchestra, Empire of the Sun, The Flaming Lips.

Lowlights were Gorillaz and [somebody dressed as] Elvis, in particular, whose violent intervention [punching Dave in the head, with Steve and Gerry wombats trying to restrain the violet, silent, assailant] meant missing meeting Crystal Castles (CC)... for now...

It was also very, very hot!!

Next it was EXIT festival in Serbia. Surprisingly, Placebo were very good, also Pendulum, The Horrors, Klaxons, Norwich band Taxi and, of course, CC, who this time we did get to meet and watch the mayhem from the side of the stage.

Alice was relatively unscathed after her crowdsurfing... this time. And, as usual, it was a killer set.

Then on to the Saturday at Latitude, once again courtesy of CC.

It was the first time I'd been to Latitude and when we eventually strayed from backstage it seemed very genteel, family orientated, and friendly but lacking any kind of edge.

Highlights were watching James from stage side and, of course, CC. This time Alice ended up smacking a groper and cutting the set a bit short... but still a blinder. Also The XX impressed but Belle and Sebastian didn't.

Thanks to CC and Dave Doughman for making it a summer to remember, mostly for the right reasons.

Don't miss Crystal Castles at the UEA on Sunday 24 October ... you have been warned!
