Digging deeper

wombat wombat’s ‘back to school’ at Norwich Arts Centre on Friday 16 September 2011 showcasing a trio of stupendously talented vocalists whose individuality will take your breath away.

New Yorker Sarabeth Tucek takes centre stage accompanied by her producer Luther (Noah & The Whale, Richmond Fontaine) Russell.

This extract from a review of their gig at St Pancras Old Church, London, on 01 September is an idea of what to expect: “It’s the overtly empowering Sarabeth Tucek that unites religious adherents and atheists alike tonight, her ethereal vocals wafting over the congregation, filling this vast, ornate and exquisite space like oxygenated air flushing into a vacuum… It’s quasi-sacred set closer, Get Well Soon however, that proves most rousing as it gushes subtly atop a crest of swelling crescendo. Kids are at this point carted off. Whether it’s emotionally too potent or merely several hours past conventional bedtimes remains a mystery, although rather more conclusive is the enlightenment provided by she in the figurative frontroom of He.” (dotsanddashes.co.uk)

Comparisons inevitably abound: Laura Marling, Hope (Mazzy Star) Sandoval, Cat Power, Liz (Cocteau Twins) Frazer, Kristin Hersh, Mimi (Low) Parker… Perhaps. But one thing’s certain: Sarabeth Tucek’s pure voice, emotive delivery and candid intimacy is electrifying. It’s raw power. It’s shredded nerves. It’s extreme. It’s perfect. It’s heartbreaking. It’s haunting. It’s extraordinary. And it’s perfect for a church venue: check out this live footage from the Union Chapel, London, this May

Suffice to say, Tucek and Russell’s stripped-down electric and acoustic guitar performance will be stunning, life-affirming, unmissable.

We’re thrilled that Alloy Ark are joining us to unveil their new look, new sound, four-piece set up, as well as launching their download single, Blue. Having already enjoyed a sneak preview of several tracks, one of which you can hear here, we’re suitably over-excited! Expect meaty and delicate, quirky and cute, summery and B&W arthouse cinema brooding, with Dani’s characteristic enchanting English and French musings.

Tonight’s gig will also be special because it’s an ultra-rare hometown gig for the peerless charmer Rory McVicar, who has recorded BBC Maida Vale sessions for Huw Stephens and Rob da Bank. He’s also appeared at numerous festivals, including EXIT in Serbia, Latitude, and at this year’s inaugural Playfest, where he was interviewed by BBC Introducing in Norfolk and played an exclusive live track, which you can see here

Plus Howlback Hum in the bar with Tristan Burfield, Eastern Seaboard, The Star Fields, Mao’s Dynasty and Olinski.

That’s eight bands for just £6 in advance, plus booking fee where applicable – on sale now from NAC (01603 660352), Soundclash (01603 761004) and UEA (01603 508050) or online – or £8 on the door, from 8pm.

See you there!

Don’t forget, there are lots of other great music happenings in Norwich this month, especially the second (BBC Music Video Festival from 19 September until 01 October with the second Norwich Sound & Vision convention starting on 29 September and finishing on 01 October.
